On Monday the police are planning to bring a large video screen to Blackheath, in order to project images of suspected looters from around the area. I’d love to know how many convictions will result from this. All it will do is make people feel as though they live in a police state. Maybe we could all stand in front of the screens and hurl abuse too?

You and your readers should be aware that the burnt-out car in Foxwood Road last week was nothing to do with the riots. The car in question had a fault and caught fire, and being parked where it was the fire quickly spread to the house. Thankfully, I understand that no one was hurt and the fire service responded quickly, despite them being busy. An unfortunate coincidence that it happened on the night of the riots!
Whilst there were many untrue stories floating around on “riot night”, the tweets claiming that there was a burnt out car on Foxwood Road (inside The Page Estate) were accurate.
The car has been removed (the one in the photo isn’t damaged), but the evidence is still clear – it must have been a massive blaze- the house nearby has some damage to the front, all the nearby trees have been torched, the lamp post and road sign nearby look totally carbonised.
It looks very out of place on such a quiet road – I feel terribly sorry for whoever was in there – it must have been terrifying. As several people in the blogosphere have commented, there’s something truly Ballardian about what has been going on.
Related: See 853blog for a nearby tweet about Asda that turned out to be untrue, even though it now appears as fact in both the News Hopper and The Gaurdian:
At about 17:40 this evening, Mrs Bugle was dumped off a 185 bus near Rosenthal Road this evening by a cowardly bus driver who when he saw a load of people looting a shop. Rather than getting his passengers to safety, he opened the doors in front of the shop, dumped the bus and ran away. He left the passengers to fend for themselves. She ran away towards Ladywell, and called 3 different taxi companies who all said they couldn’t pick her up because of the riots in Lewisham. She was with her 15 year old niece, and only managed to get home because a passing black cab driver took pity on them and picked them up. She didn’t have enough cash on her to give him a tip.
