I can’t read architectural drawings. As several people have pointed out, there is no plan at all to stick a whopping great shutter over the front of Blackheath station. Instead the plan is to keep the external windows and entrance unchanged, but to reduce the size of the newsagents at the upper floor, and to shift the ticket office to the right, which will make more room for ticket machines, as well as revealing the windows on the other side overlooking the tracks. I don’t know about you, but nothing says “this area is dodgy” like a roller shutter with graffiti on it. That appears to be what’s been approved for the station following renovation work (minus the graffiti to begin with).

Unusually, the track in the bay remains in situ, although it is now heavily overgrown
and otherwise obstructed. The area to the north (now a car-park) was formerly an
area of railway sidings, where commuter trains were stabled when not in use.
The bay platform used to come into its own when a circus was taking place on
Blackheath. Many of the animals would arrive in train vans. The circus would then
process through Blackheath Village on to the heath. There is a local legend that on
one occasion an elephant took exception to a passing bus — and the bus lost!
£420,000 of our money spent on tinkering with the station again. Bear in mind the lifts took nine months to be installed last time. Looking forward to the grand opening in 2035!

But with an added helpful soundbite from those experts in timeliness, SouthEastern trains. Vince Lucas, service delivery director, enthuses:
“For our passengers at Blackheath the completion of this project is a real improvement that they can see for themselves. The station is vital to the local community and encouraging more and more people to use trains has to be a good thing. As with other stations which have benefited from similar schemes, we are sure that more passengers will now start to use the train to get around.”
Yes it’s great Vince. I’m sure I will continue to choose SouthEastern over and above the wide range of other train operating companies available to me from Blackheath station, skipping down the beautifully rendered steps as I do so.
BVRG has a copy of a letter sent out to local residents, explaining that the
building of the Sistine Chapel station improvement works will take longer than expected. It won’t be completed until late June this year.
If it takes me 1m42s extra to walk across to the wrong platform and over the bridge, this means that I will have spent approximately 5 hours walking over the wobbly bridge, before the repair work is completed. Dodgy calculations can be mocked and critiqued here.
9 months to install a lift. In the same amount of time, there will be 19.5 new electricity power stations built in China.
“ACCESS FOR ALL” WORKS – BLACKHEATH STATION
I am writing further to my September 2010 resident letter informing you of Network Rail’s planned Access for All improvement works at Blackheath station.
Site works commenced as programmed in early October 2010 with the installation of a temporary footbridge. The planned works are now well underway with much of the new ramp around the outside of the station building leading down to platform 2 now constructed, the new lift shaft from ticket hall level to platform 1 constructed and the associated lift equipment installed.
The extremely cold weather conditions experienced during December and January, some unforeseen difficulties with installation of a new power supply upgrade required for the lift, including fabrication issues with the new staircase for platform 1, have slightly delayed our progress, with works now anticipated to be completed late June 2011.
We apologise for any ongoing disruption, however the equipment we use means some disturbance is unavoidable, but we will make every effort to minimise any unnecessary noise. Furthermore, those working on site are briefed on working responsibly in the local community.

Meridian magazine isn’t usually the first thing I rush for when the post arrives – it seems to be full of puff-pieces about below average restaurants, or bland soft-stories that could be about anywhere. But aside from that, Chapter Two is such a great place, and Blackheath is lucky to have them.
As you can see from the photo (taken Friday 8th August), the building work is coming on well. I don’t know whether they will fill your front hall with junk mail should you sign up, but they are offering a trip to New York, and the website also illustrates how the redesigned restaurant will look. When you sign up, they say they’ll send you a 10% voucher for use with your first meal.
