Saw this leaflet being handed out at Blackheath station last week. The only time I’ve ever seen people sitting inside that army recruitment office was once – a mother and what looked like her 17 year old son were sitting on the chairs looking out onto the high street… I couldn’t help wondering whether she was signing him up to go and get shot at in Iraq or Afghanistan.

I think Blackheath village is a very odd location for an Army recruitment office.
Maybe not when you consider that there is also a cadet training centre and TA place on the heath as well. I always assumed the two were connected in some way…?
The leaflet above was for the Territorial Army. Joining does not automatically mean you are shipped off to get shot!
That would be a really expensive waste of manpower
It means you get a paid respected part time job/ hobby, with lots of opportunities for course and activites and adventure.

Interesting anonymous note regarding the recently closed down Army Recruitment Office just dropped through my door reading:
WARNING!
Foxtons Estate Agents have brought the old Army Recruitment Office at 9 Lee Road, SE3 in the Village & have very quietly applied for change of usage.
TWO POINTS:
1. Change of usage is a virtually impossible task for anyone apart from foxtons for some reason. By granting this the council will be setting a dangerous precedent which could lead to the demise of your already beleaguered local shops.
2. Foxtons would require parking permits for a very substantial number of cars for the station car park which is already overloaded. Should this happen parking in the village will become virtually impossible. This will be further aggravated by the planned closure for redevelopment of the Blackheath Grove car park.
