Lewisham Mayor’s office responds about Eliot Pits

Got a very rapid response from the Mayor’s office. See below:

Dear Blackheath Bugle,

I am writing to you on behalf of Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, to acknowledge receipt of your email received 28th May 2013.

Having looked into this matter at Sir Steve’s request, the proposal for Eliot Pits to be considered as a suitable place to install children’s play facilities was first suggested at a Blackheath Ward assembly by local ward councillors as a key ward priority to meet a lack of an accessible children’s play area. By way of background, the criteria set out for the selection of sites for a children’s play space were that the site should be publically accessible and within the boundary of the Blackheath Ward. Any structures should not impact on the vista of the Heath, not be sited too close to residential properties and any facility should not have a detrimental affect on the ecology of the green space. Ward Councillors discussed various options within the Blackheath ward with parks officers, the Blackheath Society and the Local Assembly and it was decided that Eliot Pits was an option to put forward to the next stage. Options for sites on the more open sections of the Heath were rejected due to the impact on vista. I am also advised that during these meetings no suitable alternative had been suggested by members of the wider public.

That said, I would like to clarify that discussions into this suggestion are at a very early stage. The feasibility process has only recently started and nothing will be done until a phase 1 ecological survey is carried out by an independent consultant. Should the findings and recommendations in the survey conclude that the process can continue without detriment to the ecology of the area, the Council will commission landscape architects to begin the feasibility stage leading to outline design proposals. At this stage officers would carry out in-depth consultation with local residents, the Blackheath Society, the Safer Neighbourhood Team for Blackheath, the Blackheath Ward Assembly and other interested parties in addition to the relevant council officers. Following this, officers will ask the architects to complete the brief and then decide on particular proposals prior to seeking all necessary approvals and consents (Ministerial consent will be required for the permanent erection of the play equipment on the common). As part of the Ministerial consent process, there will be an opportunity for consultees to write to the Planning Inspectorate with any views on the proposal.

I trust that this is helpful.

Yours sincerely,

Andy Williams
Office of Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham

Sounds like a level-headed response to me. Would be good to see the initial proposals as a public document. As a side-note, it might be worth also following David Notton who has been tweeting his ecological examinations of the pits:

I wonder whether having an active and responsive residents group in Blackheath in some way acts to the detriment of less wealthy parts of Lewisham in this instance. Because the Blackheath Society is so good at spotting potential sources of funding, it inevitably means that it will put in bids for funding more expertly than say a group based around a more deprived housing estate in another part of Lewisham. This isn’t a criticism of the Blackheath Society, just an observation.

Blackheath’s proposed Pocket Park on BBC London

A report on the plan to build one of Boris’ Pocket Parks on Eliot Pits.
Given that the money is supposed to “green-up” urban parts of London, the report does demonstrate how green the heath already is…
See the previous post here for the previous post about this.

Coquillage

Coquillage photo, fish shop, Blackheath, fishmongers
The vegetarian bugle was sent to Coquillage, the local fish shop last weekend. I’m told the fish was great, so if you’re looking for something to set fire to on the barbecue this weekend, here’s what we did. They also sell Samphire (green stuff at the rear left of the photo), which is really nice with a little lemon juice, as a green salad next to your fish. Very few places sell samphire, so this is quite a find!

Jade Boulangerie and Coquillage occasionally give out 10%-off vouchers, which can come in handy. Anyway, without going all Jamie Oliver on you, here’s what we did:

Ingredients:
Whole sea bass, cleaned and de-scaled (they cleaned it reasonably well at the shop, but there was a little more to do).
2-3 cloves of garlic (peeled and cut in half)
Slices of lemon
Bay leaves
Samphire
Olive Oil

Method:
Wash and de-scale the sea bass. It should be sliced open from the underbelly (do fish have bellies?)
Cut some lines diagonally across the fish
Stuff the garlic, lemon, and bay leaves into the cuts
Stick it on the BBQ turning occasionally until it’s brown. – one of these helps (Sainsbury’s sell them too).
Serve with samphire drizzled with olive oil and lemon juice.

Anyway, it’s good to see them doing well, especially in a location that saw other businesses fail before.

100 Horses on Blackheath

100 horses on Blackheath
I’m guessing for Olympics preparation… As spotted by twitter user @shaawasmund.

UPDATE:
Seems it was the move of the King’s Royal Artillery to a new home in Woolwich. (Didn’t think we had a king)…

Snowy Blackheath

It snowed. In case you haven’t looked out of the window. God knows how we’ll cope tomorrow, what with SouthEastern and everything. I really want to build a network of igloos on the heath, so here’s hoping there’s more snow… If you’ve got any nice pics of Blackheath, send them this way! Happy snowdays!

Pubs in Blackheath on New Year’s Eve 2011

Here’s a list of the various opening times in Blackheath.

All the info below is from me phoning the pubs today, so may not be perfect.

If you’re going to try and watch fireworks over London (where the Thai hot air balloon shown above lifted up from a couple of years back), try the junction of Cade Road and General Wolfe Road, shown below – nearest Blackheath pub is the Hare & Billet. (see map at the bottom of this post).

Hare & Billet
No tickets required – open from 11am until 1am on New Year’s Day.

Cave Austin
Open from 8.30pm – with an extended license (guy on the phone wasn’t sure until when – possibly 3am or 4am?) Tickets are £12 in advance, or £15 on the door.

The Crown
No ticket required
Open until 1am

The Railway
No ticket required
Open until 2am

O’Neill’s
Tickets are £5 on the door,
Open until 1.30am

Prince of Wales
No ticket required
Open until 1am (he thinks but not sure)

Zero Degrees
As with last year, they’re not answering the phone – I’ve dropped them an email, and I’ll update the blog if they reply.

Good spot for watching fireworks over London:

On riot night: a burnt out car on Foxwood Road

Location of the burnt out car in Foxwood Road
UPDATE:
It seems that the burnt out car was an unfortunate coincidence. From an anonymous commenter below:

You and your readers should be aware that the burnt-out car in Foxwood Road last week was nothing to do with the riots. The car in question had a fault and caught fire, and being parked where it was the fire quickly spread to the house. Thankfully, I understand that no one was hurt and the fire service responded quickly, despite them being busy. An unfortunate coincidence that it happened on the night of the riots!

Whilst there were many untrue stories floating around on “riot night”, the tweets claiming that there was a burnt out car on Foxwood Road (inside The Page Estate) were accurate.

https://twitter.com/buttonjockey/status/100883493315289088

The car has been removed (the one in the photo isn’t damaged), but the evidence is still clear – it must have been a massive blaze- the house nearby has some damage to the front, all the nearby trees have been torched, the lamp post and road sign nearby look totally carbonised.

It looks very out of place on such a quiet road – I feel terribly sorry for whoever was in there – it must have been terrifying. As several people in the blogosphere have commented, there’s something truly Ballardian about what has been going on.

Related: See 853blog for a nearby tweet about Asda that turned out to be untrue, even though it now appears as fact in both the News Hopper and The Gaurdian:

Removals in Blackheath

Removals in Blackheath
I promise this won’t turn into a regular feature, but if you need someone to move your stuff from A to B, this guy is really good. We’ve used him twice now, and he’s been good both times. And no, I don’t agree with fly-posting, but at least it’s a useful poster (unlike half the hideous ads we have to look at in the station). We needed someone, he’s local, cheap, and helpful. He charges by the hour, drives a big van, and can bring a second pair of hands if necessary. Telephone 07523094412.

(Incidentally, this isn’t an ad, it’s an endorsement. He doesn’t know who I am, and didn’t ask me to do this).
